Did you know that today is World Bee Day?
These fuzzy black and yellow insects are hugely important and unfortunately are in decline and need our help.
Why are bees so important?
Bees are brilliant pollinators. Around 80% of all flowering plants are pollinated by animals or insects and bees are the best at the job! They pollinate the crops for our food as well as many other plants and trees that our wildlife depend on.
Why are bees in trouble?
There are many reasons that bees are in decline but the main ones are due to habitat loss, pesticides and climate change.
What can we do to help the bees?
Providing bees with the perfect environment is the best way you can help. Planting flowers that are bee-friendly is a great way to provide them with a food source. When choosing plants and flowers look for the bee-friendly or pollinator symbol on the labels.
Wildflowers are very bee-friendly and we have a lovely mix in our Bee Mix Seedballs. These little balls are made from a mix of compost, seeds, clay and chilli pepper. The clay and chilli pepper protect the seeds from wildlife and insects until they are established.
You can also provide them with shelter by putting up a bee hotel in a sunny spot in your garden.
Another way to help support our bees is to buy bee-friendly products. The Great British Bee Co make a range of balms made from beeswax to help protect your hands, lips and skin and stop it drying out. This Original Beehive Balm is unscented, completely natural and perfect for keeping in your pocket or handbag.
As well as creating lovely products, The Great British Bee Co also donate 10% of all their profits to British Honey Bee research!
Another UK maker who is proud to support the bees is Nectar and Bumble. They create lovely gifts all inspired by bees and wildflowers. Nectar and Bumble donate 10% of their profits to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to help save British bees.
They design some beautiful cards, notebooks, magnets, stickers and prints including this fabulous Bee Happy print – perfect for brightening up any room of your home.
